Monthly website maintenance checklist
A website is an operating business asset. Regular checks prevent small failures from becoming lost enquiries, security incidents or expensive emergency work.
Backups and recovery
Confirm that backups completed, cover files and databases, and are stored separately from the live site. A backup is only useful if it can be restored. Test the recovery process periodically and record who is responsible.
Security and updates
- Apply supported software and plugin updates.
- Review administrator accounts and active sessions.
- Check SSL validity and security alerts.
- Remove abandoned integrations and unused accounts.
Test the customer journey
Submit every important form, test booking or checkout steps and confirm that notifications arrive. Check telephone, email, map and social links on mobile. A page can look healthy while its main conversion action is broken.
Performance
Review the largest images, loading errors and changes to mobile speed. Avoid installing unnecessary scripts. Performance work should focus first on the pages that attract visitors or generate enquiries.
Content accuracy
Verify prices, opening hours, staff details, policies and availability. Update outdated screenshots and examples. Publish new material only when it answers a genuine customer question; thin articles create maintenance work without adding value.
Analytics and search
Compare traffic, enquiries and search queries with the previous period. Investigate sudden drops, indexing errors and popular pages that fail to convert. Record changes so future results can be connected to real actions.
Quarterly additions
Run a restore test, review accessibility, inspect structured data and assess whether the hosting plan still fits traffic and storage. Confirm domain renewal and contact ownership before expiry becomes urgent.
